Posted May 31, 2017 - Ocularist - Maxiofacial/Craniofacial

The University of Illinois Hospital & Health Sciences System (UI HEALTH) is seeking an Ocularist to join our Maxiofacial Clinic. Responsible for fitting, fabricating, inserting, and maintaining custom ocular conformers, ocular prostheses, and scleral shells for pediatric and adult patients with congenital and acquired ocular conditions. Fabrication of ocular portion of orbital prostheses.

Essential Responsibilities:

  • Fabricate and fit ocular prostheses for individuals who have lost an eye or eyes due to trauma or illness.
  • Make impression of the eye socket (to include in operating room), shape plastic shell, paint iris and fit ocular prostheses.
  • Insert and maintain ocular prosthetics.
  • Teach the patient on the proper care, cleaning, removal and insertion of prosthesis.
  • Teach students, residents and fellows.
  • Record in patient charts.
  • Perform other related duties and participate in special projects as assigned.

 Requirements include:

  • Bachelor's degree in medical illustration, fine arts or a related field is required.
  • Board certification by the National Examining Board of Ocularists preferred.
  • Member of Society of Ocularists preferred.
  • A minimum of 3 years of experience as an Ocularist or Anaplastologist with experience and
  • knowledge of ocular anatomy and ocular prosthetic fitting and fabrication techniques required.
  • Effective communication skills; high level of artistic ability.
