The most well-crafted, naturally convincing, and aesthetically pleasing prosthesis is only as good as the health of the skin upon which it is born. Regardless of the retention mechanism used, care of the soft tissue is paramount. Patients must comply with a regular regime of home hygiene to maintain a healthy tissue bed where the prosthesis sits. However, even with the most well-established and maintained hygiene routine, skin problems persist. Hypertrophic, granulation and excessively dry soft tissue are common observations, along with dermatitis, fungal and yeast infections. Avoiding full blown infection is one of the primary goals when skin response becomes a challenge. Further challenges are encountered with irradiated tissue where necrotic bone can also become a challenging feat for healing. This course reviews commonly occurring soft tissue problems, describes experiential wound and skin response management techniques, and explores intervention options through expert surgical consultation.
